The program for the Tri-Point Medical Center included a 125 bed replacement hospital, an existing office building, and a proposed 80k square foot medical office building. The challenge was to create a site plan that provided division of circulation, and adequate parking within close proximities to critical access points, while maintaining a holistic healing atmosphere.
Also, being in the snow-belt, the facility needed adequate staging room to place the mounds of snow that it receives in the winter. To achieve this, the scheme utilizes sheet flow drainage with center islands and swales, these center islands would be oversized to 15’ to accommodate drainage flow during the warm seasons, and snow banks during the cold season. These swales were adorned with boulders and plant material.
The series of gardens at the Tri-Point Medical Center was originally inspired by the stream that passes through this site. Designated by the US Corps of Engineers as a pristine stream, it limited development and began to directly inform the site design. Utilized as a unifying element, the energy and healing properties of the stream were metaphorically channelled into the Healing Garden, the Chapel, Main Entry Garden, Gratitude Garden, and ultimately returned downstream.
The path, symbolizing the stream, is adorned with boulders and plant material and leads directly through the Healing Garden and to the chapel. Pavement patterns continue this theme across the main entry area, and ultimately to the Gratitude Garden located next to the dining area. A multi-tiered waterfall and stream greet outdoor diners and provide a beautiful escape that can be enjoyed from chairs, rockers, and Adirondacks.
